The Hidden Key

Written and Illustrated By Karen Tweedie
The Hidden Key by Karen Tweedie This first book was inspired by an exhibit of Eastern Shore Raised Panel Furniture on display at Kerr Place Museum during 2002 in Onancock, Virginia. This unique style of furniture, with pieces dating from 1730 - 1820, was produced by the same joiners, or carpenters, who built the homes in the area.

This fictional book was written for readers ages 8 - 12. In the story, two cousins spend the summer with their grandparents in Accomac and purchase a box at a local auction that turns out to hold many secrets to the past. As these children hunt for clues to family trees and learn about life nearly 200 years ago from old letters and a diary, they unravel mysteries that add to their summer adventure. They are assisted by the curator of Kerr Place in their search. Items in the actual furniture exhibit appear in this fictional story.

Written and illustrated by Karen Tweedie, a former teacher, The Hidden Key includes instructions for several arts and crafts activities and leads readers step-by-step to research and create their own family tree. Also included in the appendix is information for parents and teachers which suggests ways to use this interesting resource to help meet the Standards of Learning (SOL's) for Virginia Public Schools in English and History for first through fifth graders.

As an educator, Karen wanted to make history come alive for young readers. Readers will enjoy following the adventure and will be able to compare life today with life 200 years ago. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book is being donated to the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society. The cost of the book is $12.95 and shipping is $1.75.
